Got my bike back from the mechanic with the Supertrapp installed.. She is a different girl now, for sure. More of a 'tough mamma' than a sweet little thing.
Since I don't do work on the bike, the mechanic and I had a rather brief conversation (or two). Bottom line is that he made me feel comforatble that he knew what he was doing (except any reference made about the famous white spacer did not go anywhere). The main point that we reached an understanding on was on what range I wanted peak performance (low, middle, high range). From my description of how I use the bike and what I expected, he tweeked the bike for mid range performance. I basically said I wanted to get from 20 to 65 as quick as possible and the high end was a bonus.
He rejeted the carb. and wound up with 6 disks on the Supertrapp. Oil change, valve check, $150 in labor later, the bike is faster and has a deeper sound that almost (but doesn't) cover up the sewing machine sound of the engine itself.
The sound of the Supertrapp is deeper than I had expected from what I heard on the various postings. This is a pleasant suprise because I thought it was going to sound more sport bike like. It sure doesn't.
Performance feels better (faster/quicker) across the board and I went 70 and it felt like it was going 50 before. 1st gear has a less torquey feel but in general there is a smooth quick take off and then there
is more power and high speed in each gear after that. I think I got what I asked for.
Only problem is that there is a bunch more 'popping'. It is not the same as the 'farts' with the stock muffler. The stock backfires sounded and felt more explosive. The current 'pops' have a different feel that I don't know how to describe(better flow, less constrictive in nature).
My problem/question is that in general the bike is running so much better, should I be concerned about all the new popping. Should I copy some of the write ups on the white spacer and bring them to him and try to get him to work on it more?
Anyway, if anyone needs a stock muffler I've got one to send you, just email me.
